Student government of DSUM is involved in the development and updating of educational programs.
On March 2, 2021, the Academy of Student Governance, which operates within the EduSpace project, for the sixth time gathered active students of Donetsk State University of Management and Donetsk Law Institute for training. As DSUM is currently monitoring and making changes to educational programs, the relevant topic of the training was chosen – “The role of student government in the development and updating of educational programs.”
Rector of DSUM Svitlana Marova, who attended the event, motivated students to be more actively involved in the process of building a system of internal quality assurance of education at the university:
“DSUM positions itself as a leading university. We are open to new trends, we have many plans. Students are our main stakeholders. We willingly support your initiatives in the field of leisure, public projects, in order to create an open and comfortable environment in DSUM. To improve the quality of education this year, we have introduced a new system of teaching foreign languages, improved the mechanism of free choice of subjects. Let’s move on, jointly creating quality educational programs for the city and the region! ”
Vice-rector for scientific and pedagogical work Valentyna Tokareva also addressed the students with a motivational speech. She noted that participation in the development of the education quality system requires from stakeholders expertise and preparedness – knowledge of the processes of developing educational programs and procedures for their revision:
“Today’s event is held in order to guide you in terms of self-development, self-improvement as experts in the quality of education. The coaches will present you a kind of “kitchen” of educational programs, share their own experiences and experiences. With the acquired baggage of knowledge you will be able to join the process of evaluation of two new master’s programs of DSUM, to propose changes to them as applicants for higher education, potential undergraduates.
In the first part of the training, which was moderated by the head of the Department of Sociology of Management, expert of the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education Natalia Nykyforenko, participants mastered the thesaurus of quality education. The etymology of already familiar concepts, such as “student”, “faculty”, “semester”, “lecture”, “exam”, “session”, etc., was worked out in the format of the quiz, and relatively new ones – “higher education seeker”, “guarantor”. programs “,” support group “,” educational component “, introduced by the Law of Ukraine” On Higher Education “. Then there was an “incoming” online testing of students’ knowledge of the quality of education.
The participants got acquainted with the activities of the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education, new accreditation procedures, higher education standards approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in various specialties and educational levels, on the basis of which educational programs are developed. On the example of the educational program “Conflict Resolution and Mediation” students saw how to determine the focus and features of EP, in particular – how to monitor trends in the labor market, trends in the specialty, communication with academia and foreign partners.
The students were especially interested in the information about the results of DSUM participation in the Project “Implementation of the quality assurance system of education through university-business-government cooperation” (EDUQAS), in particular, about the processes of quality assurance in European HEIs, which were partners in this project. The volume and structure of educational programs became a separate subject of consideration at the training.
As a result, the representatives of the Student Governance specified their ideas about the possibilities of participation in the development and revision of educational programs, namely, the possibilities to conduct independent research of stakeholders’ opinions; establish relations with applicants and maintain relations with graduates; make proposals for the introduction of new disciplines, modules, topics; new forms and methods of teaching in order to better achieve learning outcomes; changes in the logic of the EP; volumes of practice at meetings of security support groups; participate in the creation of local documents (regulations, instructions), etc.
The second part of the training was devoted directly to the analysis of educational programs by students and the development of proposals for their improvement. The discussion of the new EP “Territorial Community Management” was carried out under the moderation of the head of the project group Valentina Nikolaeva in the format of a “world cafe”. The result was a presentation of the work of 4 groups of students in the form of a SWOT-analysis of the program, outlining its strengths and prospects for development, as well as identifying weaknesses and risks of implementation.
The final task of the workshop was to conduct a comparative analysis of the current EP “Conflict Resolution and Mediation” and the project to update it. Students worked in groups on various aspects – the content of the program, the logic of educational components, the formation of social skills, the formation of professional competencies. As a result of careful work, a number of positive changes in the program were identified regarding the formation of soft skills. Given the great demand in the labor market of English-speaking professionals, students emphasized the attention of the guarantor of the program Natalia Nikiforenko on the need to maintain the study of professional English and not be limited to the offer of teaching English “Communicative Workshop”. Discussion has erupted over the appropriateness of including the disciplines of International Humanitarian Law and Restorative Justice in the curriculum.
Thus, the training proved to be effective for both students and guarantors of educational programs.
